Bee-Eaters in Sri Lanka: A Colorful Delight
On an evening safari in Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka, we saw these cute little bee-eaters enjoying their evening bath. Birds enjoying their sand baths are one of my favourite sightings on wild safaris.
Sand bathing is a common behavior observed in bee-eater flocks throughout the year. This activity holds significance for bee-eaters, as they seem to enjoy the feeling of dust on their feathers. It helps them removing parasites from their bodies
As a country with rich wild life, Sri Lanka is a paradise for birds. Bee-eaters are very common in our national parks. Sometimes we can even find them in our home gardens. Green bee-eaters are the most common among them.
Bee-eaters are part of a big family of birds. In Sri Lanka, we have three types: Blue-tailed Bee-eaters, Green Bee-eaters, and Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters. Each kind has its own special features that make it unique and beautiful.
Bee-eaters are known for their bright feathers. These colorful feathers help them attract mates and tell each other apart.
When do they come here?
You can find bee-eaters in open places like grasslands, scrublands, and open woodlands in Sri Lanka. The Blue-tailed Bee-eater comes here in the summer from faraway places. The Green Bee-eater lives here all year…
